Game Designer | Game Developer | Systems Design | QA Tester | Wits Digital Arts Honours

Chris

I am passionate about Game Design and Development. I completed my Honours degree in Digital Arts at the University of Witswaterand end of 2025. I'm eager to learn and grow post university! These are some things I have worked on previously.

My Projects

Respawn²

Respawn² was my final-year project, developed in collaboration with my group partner, Liam Moodley. Together, we designed and built a third-person isometric shooter from the ground up. I was responsible for the server architecture, creating a dedicated server build hosted on my home desktop PC to manage player matches and lobbies. The server validated all player inputs as an anti-cheat measure. By hosting locally rather than relying on international servers, a common hurdle for South African developers, we achieved near-zero latency. I also designed and developed the player systems, mechanics, weapons, gameplay systems, matchmaking, camera system and balancing.

Larry

Larry is a short animation I created with my group partner, Callum Freer, as our final-year Animation exam. Designed for playback in the Wits Digital Dome, the animation follows an alien named Larry who stumbles upon an abandoned Eishkom space station, built in an attempt to capture the sun's rays before they reach the solar panels down in South Africa. I was responsible for modelling and texturing the space station, as well as the editing and sound design that brought the project together. We completed this exam with distinction.

The Legendary Bottle Toss

A short animation I worked on independently as my final third-year exam. I was tasked with taking a short sound bite and animating a scene around it. I chose a clip from a basketball game and animated a scene in which a girl approaches a guy drinking water, he finished the water and shoot the bottle from a distance into a bin. The 3D models and rigs were provided; my work focused on character animation, camera movement, and lighting.

My Skills

Languages

C# Learnt to code with C# for Unity during my Digital Arts degree at Wits.

Tools

Unity Game Engine Primary game engine, taught during my degree.
Blender Learnt 3D animation during my degree and 3D modelling on the side.
Git Version control for all projects.

Theory

Game Design Through my Digital Arts degree at Wits, I developed a deep understanding of game design fundamentals. What makes games engaging, how systems interact, and the principles behind compelling player experiences.
Animation Studied both animation theory and hands-on 3D animation throughout my Digital Arts degree, covering principles of movement, timing, and character performance in both traditional and digital contexts.

Multiplayer

Networking & Infrastructure Hands-on experience across the multiplayer stack: LAN via Mirror, online lobbies with Photon, and a self-hosted dedicated server built on Unity Netcode for GameObjects. Also worked with AWS for server hosting and player data, and Azure PlayFab for account management.
